The Networking Playbook Part 2: Show Up
Dec 04, 2024Does the thought of networking make you cringe? Good news! Networking is a lot more expansive than most people think. In part two of our three-part series, "The Networking Playbook," we explore what it means to show up for networking, no matter what the platform.
Part 2: Show Up
First of all, let's clarify what "showing up" means. In essence, this is all about being present to build genuine connections with new people while reinforcing the relationships you already possess. Fortunately, that includes way more avenues than attending a huge after-hours business event. In fact, those tend to be some of the least effective networking strategies for job seekers!
Show Up on Social Media
With over a billion members worldwide, LinkedIn is the obvious king of social media platforms for professionals. As we discussed in Part 1: Suit Up, your LinkedIn profile needs to be carefully crafted to draw attention from recruiters. However, most people stop there – they are not sure exactly WHAT they are supposed to do on LinkedIn beyond applying for jobs.
Leverage LinkedIn
In fact, you need to spend at least 30 minutes a day on LinkedIn on non-job-search-related activities. Start discussions, share industry news, and provide thoughtful advice. Active participation builds your reputation and invites others to connect with you.
Groups: Your Secret Weapon
Groups are a great way to build connections and establish your reputation. Because the Groups are segmented by industry, location, alumni groups, job title, and other factors, you can really narrow down your focus.
Plus, if you have a Premium account, you can send a message or connection invitation to fellow Group members for free.
Reach Out Personally
When connecting, be specific about why you're interested. A personalized message signals your intent to create a valuable relationship. Getting stumped on what to say? LinkedIn Premium is offering AI that will help you kick-start your messages, especially as it looks for common ground between you and your target person.
Show Up in Person
While online and social media networking is valuable, let's not forget the old tried-and-true method of face-to-face interactions. Meeting people in person strengthens connections and makes you more memorable.
Ideally, you should commit to one networking event per week. Yes, both virtual Zoom meetings and in-person meetings count – so long as you follow up with people afterward.
Attend a Variety of Events
Diversify your networking activities to expand your reach.
- Professional Events: Join associations, conferences, or industry-specific groups to connect with decision-makers for your target jobs.
- Job Seeker Support Groups: Groups like the Brown Bag Job Search Group on Meetup.com offer opportunities to meet fellow job hunters and share resources.
- Social Events: Don't forget to engage with groups that may not be directly related to your job search. People like to share resources with people they know, like, and trust. Therefore, attending social functions or groups can build relationships in a different way, which can lead to genuine job opportunities.
Don't Get Tongue-Tied
Prepare a compelling 30-second elevator speech. This brief introduction should highlight your skills, goals, and unique value, leaving the listener eager to continue the conversation. Keep it concise; this isn't your life story but a hook to spark interest.
Still feeling shy? Try this tactic: Introduce yourself to one person at the event. Then, introduce your new friend to someone else at the event. Now, you can sit back and relax while listening to their conversation! Both parties will think you are a brilliant, attentive listener.
Final Thoughts
Networking is an essential part of any job search. By showing up — both online and in person — you increase your visibility, build trust, and uncover opportunities. Remember, the goal isn't just to meet people but to form meaningful, lasting connections that benefit both parties.
