Video: Are job interviews a joke?

Do job interviews feel like a joke to you?🙄

If so, maybe you should treat them like one. 😎

Okay, before you freak out, let me explain what I mean.

I’m Donna Shannon, and I’m a career coach, but I also do stand-up comedy. 👏

And here’s one thing I bet you did not know about comedy:

For those five minutes that you see a comedian on stage, there are literally hours of work that happens before that.

From writing jokes to practicing them on open mics to just really hashing over the material over and over and over again to make it so you see that seamless performance that seems so natural, like they’re just speaking to you from their heart… all while making you laugh every 24 seconds.

That’s the thing with job interviews.

We need to put in the same amount of serious work before you show up in that room with those interviewers. 📚

Yeah, you’re not facing a crowd of 300 people, and you don’t have five minutes.

You’re more like 30 to 45 minutes. That’s why this is even more important to prepare for your interviews.

I see job seekers make this same mistake over and over again. They’re like, “I’m just going to go in and wing it. I’m just going to be myself.”

And yes, you do want to be yourself, but you also want to be the best version of yourself.

Remember, your objective is to get a job offer, not to make people laugh, not to make new friends, not to casually exchange ideas.

This is serious business, and you need to prepare seriously for it.

Just like comedians who are seriously putting in the work.
