3 Zoom Bad Habits That Can Kill Your Interview
May 28, 2021Sure, everyone by now has heard the obvious Zoom tips: Do not have a messy background, use good lighting, and make sure your sound is on-point. However, there are three Zoom habits that can really destroy your interview.
1. Not dressing appropriately
I am not talking about the classic sitting-in-your-underwear mistake. This is far more insidious. Just because so many people have become accustomed to working at home, they forget that this is, indeed, a job interview and they must dress appropriately.
You don’t need to put on a full suit, but ask yourself, “If I was meeting with these people in-person, would I wear this?”
Sure, t-shirts are comfy, but they are not proper interview attired.
- Flirting with the camera
Yes, some people do this. I image that they are spending so much time acting flirty on the camera that it becomes a habit. They are easily distracted into watching themselves, playing with their hair, or even making “duck faces” that they don’t even realize they are doing it.
This is NOT a dating app! Be sure to adopt a business mindset and keep your purpose clear to make a good first impression.
- Kilroy was here
First started as graffiti in World War II, Kilroy is a little dude peeking over a wall with his nose hanging over the side. If your camera is set at the wrong angle, you are doing a great Kilroy impression.
Just take a moment to fix your camera angle to make sure that you are centered in the frame. This way, we get to see the whole you.
