Normally, it can take years of experience or specialized training to be trusted with the keys of a multi-million dollar estate – or for multiple properties. Estate Managers often hire the Household Managers to be the on-site manager for remote properties.
Like personal assistants, there are variations in what each of these positions entail, as each family’s needs are different. Their responsibilities can range from managing the remodeling of a 30,000 sf home to organizing an event for 1,000 guests.
Private service management descriptions:
Household Managers
In charge of homes ranging in size from 5,000 – 25,000 sf. Property size from a small plot to 50 acres. Manage domestic staff members, vendors, grounds men and any additional staff. Some oversight of the household budget as well as some HR capacities. Ensures proper guest care, laundry services, upholds cleanliness standards. May oversee renovations.
Estate Managers
In charge of homes over 25,000 sf or multiple properties. Property size ranging from a few acres to 100+ acres. Complete responsibility for home, including staff management, budget creation/ adherence, remodeling / construction projects. Oversight of HR, including hiring, firing, training and payroll. Works with family office. Negotiates contracts on the owner’s behalf. Ensures high standards throughout the property.
Butlers
A more formal version of the Household Manager, with many of the same duties. Concentrates on upholding service standards, cleanliness, organization and schedules.
